Job Description
Title: Advocacy Director
Location: Washington, D.C.
Immediate Responsibility:

Directing Advocacy Programs for Faithful Security, the National Religious Partnership on the Nuclear Weapons Danger (www.faithfulsecurity.org) and acting as the public face for the Faithful Security Partnership. This position will share the day-to-day staff leadership of Faithful Security with the Policy Director.  While the Advocacy Director will have some development and communications responsibilities, the bulk of these will be handled by part-time staff members.

Job Summary: 

Faithful Security is a multi-faith coalition that leverages the moral willpower of American religious communities for a nuclear weapons-free world.  The Advocacy Director will serve as a resource for religious communities committed to building a world free of nuclear weapons, while also articulating and promoting the message of the Faithful Security Partnership in the halls of Congress and beyond. She or he will facilitate the involvement of national denominations, but will also spend a significant amount of time conducting outreach to religious organizations and individuals outside the Beltway.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with Partners and the Policy Director to define organizational message, including the top legislative priorities in a given year, and develop policy statements and talking points on each topic.
  • Communicating Faithful Security’s message to individual members of Congressional and White House nuclear weapons commissions through individual meetings, sign-on letters, press events, and educational visits.
  • Acting as a media spokesperson and governmental liaison for the unified Faithful Security partnership.
  • Convening regular Partners’ meetings and conference calls to coordinate activity and ensure unified message.
  • Serving as a liaison between Partners/religious community and secular nonproliferation and disarmament groups.
  • Igniting grassroots activism in key states and districts by establishing/supporting educational efforts and innovative campaigns. 
  • Building strong relationships with official Partners while recruiting additional national religious groups into the coalition.
  • Determining points of engagement between Partner groups and members of Congressional and White House nuclear weapons commissions.
  • Coordinating with the Communications Officer to send regular faith-based analysis of nuclear weapons policy developments to Partners, Partners’ lists, and the FS email list (i.e. website content, action alerts, other educational materials).
  • Cultivating relationships with individual donors and foundation staff in coordination with Development Officer.

Credentials, Experience, and Requirements:

BA, graduate degree, or commensurate professional experience in religious studies, international relations, peace studies, or related field.

Experience in journalism, public relations, foreign policy, community organizing is preferred. 

Experience working with the religious community or with peace and security issues is desirable but not necessary. 

Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills, including capacity to represent Faithful Security as spokesperson to media, disarmament and religious communities, and government.

Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to work independently.

Occasional travel (~8 overnight trips/year, totaling ~24 nights/year)

The position will be filled by the Churches’ Center for Theology and Public Policy.
